Wildlife News from St Andrews

Wildlife margins, newly planted hedges, wild bird cover and species rich grasslands all help towards maintaining and enhancing the ecology of the farm. The benefit to wildlife is evident from the increasing populations of red deer, brown hare, red squirrel, and farmland birds, which have been in decline in past decades. In late summer the woodlands are in full fruit with bountiful cherry, damson and hazel nut trees, helping to sustain our bird population and local ramblers!

We recently accepted an invite from the Scottish RSPB to take part in a farmland bird survey. This seemed like a wonderful opportunity to get a professional count undertaken of our bird populations now that we have entered into an environmental stewardship scheme. Laura Dennis of the RSPB has now completed three early morning surveys and we are awaiting her feedback.
