News from Cuplahills Farm

Harvest was eventually gathered, dried, stored and much has been sold. As expected crop yields were well back on average. Our wheat yields were 35% lower than normal and spring barley and winter oilseed rape were both 20% lower. In reality we actually faired not too badly, as many others suffered significantly greater yield and quality penalties and in some cases failed to harvest crops. The higher market prices have helped to soften the effect of the lower yields.

A thought must surely be spared for all those who endured the ordeal of trying to lift potatoes from sodden, water logged fields. Many farmers continue to suffer the difficulty of lifting vegetables in ground conditions that have never been seen before. The damage to soil structure will take a long time to repair, equally the effect on machinery and labour that works around the clock to guarantee fresh supplies, should not be forgotten.

The wet weather continues to take its toll on the 2013 farming year. Many winter crops across the country have not been planted and some of those that were, may have to be resown. Winter ploughing, application of fertilisers, liming and weed control have all been affected to date. There will be a greater area of spring crops planted this year which will in turn affect overall productivity and farm profitability. In light of the above consumers can expect the price of many food items to remain high for the next year at least.
