Eco Cabins Work in Harmony with Nature at Family Farm in St Andrews

Cuplahills Farm is located on a hillside just 10 minutes outside St Andrews in Fife. The farm extends to 320ac of predominantly arable ground. I strive to farm in harmony with the countryside, developing new habitats and enhancing existing ones.

The undulating landscape of the farm lends itself to a variety of wildlife habitats. In 2005 my father implemented change by planting the first of two mixed species Community Woodlands, which now extend to some 40ac. These provide ideal habitats for the growing number of farmland bird species that feed on the abundance of woodland fruit and nuts.

In 2012 Cuplahills participated in the RSPB Scotland Volunteer and Farmer Alliance Project which saw an RSPB volunteer establish the bird populations on the holding. The results were encouraging with populations of high conservation species such as tree sparrow, skylark, linnet, song thrush and yellow hammer amongst others.

Following successful participation to the Scottish Rural Development Programme we have planted 2km of mixed hedging, established species rich grasslands and grass margins around all arable fields and each year we plant 2ha of wild bird seeds. Local volunteers and school children assisted with hedge planting and a local joiner has made dozens of bird boxes ready hanging this spring.

To continue the diversification trend we also set up a small, friendly livery and in the summer of 2012 instated two stunning new luxury eco-cabins. The cabins have solar panels, living sedum roofs and are situated on our prominent hillside at the heart of the farm. St Andrews Country Cabins provides the perfect harmony between tourism and nature.  The farm offers a wealth of outdoor activities for everyone whether it’s taking a walk along scenic paths, cycling, enjoying the play park or simply relaxing on the deck.

We are very proud of our farm and the fantastic wildlife that we are able to enjoy. We welcome the public and are delighted to provide farmhouse B&B and self catering accommodation so that those from further afield can also experience what the farm and East Fife has to offer.
